Apple ginger lemonade and no pizza cravings…

Today after church, my daughter had a play date at our house.

Homemade Pizza_7

Recycled picture.. not what I made today but very similar. Click on the picture to see when I made the above pizza.

I prepared a pineapple, apple, mango and grape juice for her and her friend and they devoured the juice along with the homemade pizza I prepared for them. The pizza looked amazing but you know something I didn’t have any at all. Take that, candida!

What happened to the juice?  It did the famous disappearing act. I was a bit disappointed, since I was planning on taking a picture of that, but they consumed it before I could get my camera.  Lesson learned… take the picture before you tell them that their juice is ready. I must say, that I’m thrilled that my daughter’s friend like the juice she’s a very particular about what she’ll consume.

A few days ago, I made a juice blend that I call Apple ginger lemonade.  It’s not too sweet,  the two lemons bring in the tart and ginger rounds it out with a bit of spice. We love that! Fruity drinks aren’t something I normally make for myself. Those who know me, know that when I’m juicing I mainly consume dark leafy greens, in fact some might call my drinks bitter. However I’ve gotten used to them and actually crave them.

The past week or so I have taken a detour and have been including freshly juiced sweet drinks, such as the one above. It was interesting to read what Dr. Morse had to say about fruit and candida and I must say my candida didn’t go haywire when I did occasionally juice only fruits for my drink. Despite consuming fruit drinks made with my juicer, I was still expelling candida, based on some candida experts this should not be happening at all. Interesting indeed…

You know, I’m betting the drink below would make an awesome natural soda. What do you think?

Apple ginger lemonade

  • 8 apples
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 2″ ginger
  • 2 lemons

  1. Juice all produce
  2. Serve and enjoy

All the produce used are high in anti-oxidants, the spinach supplies iron, calcium, vitamin C, Vitamin A and numerous other nutrients that our bodies crave. So what are you waiting for? Start juicing! It’s a delicious way to combat the common cold and other ailments , so consider adding this to your juicing routine.

My daughter loves this juice and I’ll definitely be adding it to the frozen fruit pops I make for her when the weather is a bit warmer.

Guess what? They’re calling for more snow today, in fact the temperature has been steadily dropping! Whee!

Juice Cleanse: Sunshine juice

I juice daily, I found that none of the store bought juice can compare to the freshly made juices I make at home. Freshly prepared juices have more nutrients since none are destroyed since it’s not pasteurized.

Breville Apple Lemon Ginger juice 1_3.13.14

Last evening, when the winds were shaking our house, I made this juice.

Sunshine Juice

  • 10 apples
  • 2″ Ginger
  • 2 lemons

  1. Add all ingredients to juicer
  2. Juice, serve and enjoy

I was going to add a habañero pepper, but I chose not to do so. I’m currently sipping on the last cup of this sweetly delicious juice (to which I added one teaspoon of black seed oil) and I am about to juice pineapple in my Breville so I can take it to work. I don’t need additional stimulants to wake me up in the morning. I continually am boosting my health based on the foods I chose to consume. It goes without saying that a boost to my health, also means I’m enhancing my immune system. All the ingredients used helps your body fight off a variety of ailments. That’s always a good thing.

Apple Benefits

  • great for cataract prevention
  • detoxifying your liver
  • reducing cholesterol
  • enhancing your heart health

Ginger benefits

  • Aids in reducing exercise induced muscle pain
  • Ginger enhances the absorption of nutrients in the body
  • Gingers anti-inflammatory properties can aid in relieving joint pain
  • Ginger aids in nausea reduction

Lemon Benefits

  • Great for cleansing your bowels (I usually drink ginger and lemon tea first thing in the morning)
  • Vitamin C in lemons aids in neutralizing free radicals linked to aging and other diseases
  • Vitamin C and flavonoids in lemons help combat infections such as colds and flu

Changing for Lent: Juicing and raw foods only

My Lutheran church observes lent and I turned over in my mind a variety of things that I could do and on that list was removing all cooked meals from my diet. In addition, I’ll be juicing most of my meals with the occasional smoothie (made with my Vita Mix) and raw food meal tossed into the mix.

If you have been following my recent posts you know I was on a juice cleanse. In total I juiced for nine days and then I came off the juice cleanse and rotated between raw solid meals and juices. While I had every intention of going longer, I mainly swapped to see how my body would react to introducing solid foods for a day and then going right back to juice. I’ve gone for long periods (weeks) with consuming only juices, but never switched it up like that before. Personally, my reaction was fine, and I swapped between the two with no issues whatsoever.

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite Stainless Steel

Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite Stainless Steel

What’s this? Why it’s the Breville 800JEXL Juice Fountain Elite – Stainless Steel. This is the juicer I should have purchased, and I did look at it before purchasing my Breville BJE510XL Juice Fountain Multi-Speed 900-Watt Juicer. But, I did balk at the price.  It’s $299, granted I can’t really say anything since my Green Star cost over $400 when I purchased it over eight years ago, and you know what? It’s still going strong even though it’s used several times weekly.

After almost two weeks, I’ve decided to return my Breville and upgrade to the $299 model. It’s not because I don’t like the one I have. Trust me, I do and judging by the amount of posts I’ve already written about this Breville (centrifugal juicer) even though I’ve only had it for less than two weeks, it’s apparent that I do enjoy using the Breville juicer. It does an amazing job for softer produce where it easily outshines my Green Star.  I still use my Green Star (triturator juicer) for harder vegetables and greens. It simply blows centrifugal juicers away with that type of produce. I’ve decided to upgrade to the next higher model. I should have chosen this from the beginning.

If you check my posts, you’ll see that the Breville juicer that I do have is mostly stainless steel, but the container that held the produce was made of plastic. That bothered me even though the durability of the product shouldn’t be an issue, judging by the amount of reviews I’ve seen written by folks that have had them for several years. However,  knowing my love of stainless, I decided to go for the upgrade so the appliance is all stainless steel. Well… the container that catches the pulp and the feed tube are made out of black plastic.

Day 7: Juice cleanse; It’s all about the savory…

Well, I’m into Day 7 of my juice cleanse… and I’m still feeling great. As I’ve said before, I feel amazing when I’m not on a juice cleanse. I know that largely has a lot to do with my outlook on life, fueling my body with the correct nutrients and my faith in Christ. Life is too short to sit around complaining about a variety of issues. Be thankful with what you have.  Even though I feel great when I’m not juicing, going on one does take me to another level.

Last evening I did a bit of thinking and have decided to change my how I juice. Whereas before I was adding the occasional citrus/carrot to my dark leafy green juices, I think for the next few days I’ll focus only on vegetables that don’t bring any sweetness to my juice blends. This morning, I juiced produce that do contain some sugar; tomatoes and lemon both have it…

What triggered my juicing switch? A few months ago, I stumbled upon a post written by a man who was plagued with candida. It was a post of happiness since a lot of the symptoms he was experiencing had been diminished.  First off let me just say that most people have candida, and when it’s in control people are unaware that it exists. The problem occurs when it gets out of hand that’s when people are plagued with symptoms and even then some might not know the reason for their issue, not all health care providers know either.  But back on topic… forum poster mentioned that he only drank green juices for seven days. Nothing sweet was added to his juice. You could almost hear the happiness as he commented as he wrote about many of the symptoms that he’d been plagued with; itchiness, rash, constipation, insomnia, etc., dissipated. He commented about the ‘candida’ that was released in his bowel movements. While there is a lot of speculation as what exactly people are seeing, I do find it interesting that many that are consuming foods that target candida are seeing the same things in their bowel movements.  While I have seen something that might be candida, I’m curious to see what I’d see if I made only non-sweet juices, so we’ll see!

Today, my savory juice is…

Savory Juice

  • 5 Roma tomatoes
  • 2 handfuls Spinach
  • 1 handful Kale
  • 1 large cucumber
  • 1/2 broccoli head
  • 5 celery stalks
  • garlic
  • 2 habañero peppers
  • 1 lemon

This morning, my daughter had some of the above juice. She said that although it was spicy it tasted good. I told her that drinking that was another natural way for her to boost the immune system. Which is true, since the produce offer a wide variety of protection from many comment ailments.

I’m currently sipping (and chewing) my juice now. It’s very savory and delicious. The acid in the lemons and tomato juice attacks the oily capsaicins in the habañero peppers, so while you’re still receiving it’s amazing benefits if you can’t stand the heat you might be able to consume this juice. The habañero peppers are hot, trust me! I accidentally inhaled some of the habañero peppers fumes when I was washing my Breville and I was coughing and gagging. Not a good time.I like the heat, but since my daughter can’t take that type of heat, I compromise by including produce with acid.

Juice cleanse: Day five; actual hunger

Well, I’m starting Day 5 of my juice cleanse

This morning I awoke around 12:30ish, but it was to make a bathroom run, and back to bed I went. I did awaken a bit later than normal, 4:45. I’m usually awake a between 3:30 and 4:00.

First Drink of the day

Hot Ginger root tea w/teaspoon of ascorbic acid powder.  Both the ginger and the ascorbic acid are great for the digestive system. One thing that I was concerned about, was not having bowel movements during the time I was on my juice cleanse. Adding this simple beverage into my daily routine, has kept me from becoming constipated.

Pick me up juice

  • 4 Apples
  • 4 Carrots
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1 large Grapefruit
  • 2″ Ginger
  • 2 Habañero peppers

This was a delicious juice. The acid from the grapefruit seemed to neutralize the potency of the habañero which I must say was a bit disappointing to me, but perfect for someone who can’t tolerate the heat but want to receive the benefits of consuming hot pepper.

I usually add a lot more ginger to something such as this, but since my daughter was drinking some of the juice I toned it down a lot!

I’m feeling hungry

Around 9:00 a.m. I actually started to feel hungry, but that has everything to do with me not consuming enough of my fresh juice before I headed out to work today. What I brought with me, was not enough to satisfy my hunger. However, I have plenty of water on hand, so I’m making sure I drink plenty of that.

I’m not craving food

Currently, I’m not craving any food. Which is a good thing, right? I know I’m flooding my system with a variety of nutrients within a concentrated form.

What’s helped me with my juice cleanse?

  • Staying focused
  • Rereading passages from Reboot with Joe
  • Watching videos about juicing

I must say, that seeing others juicing, regardless of their reason for embarking on their juice cleanse has been an inspiration.

Juice Cleanse: Starting day 4; I’m itchy, awake and still feeling great!

Well I’m entering day 4 of my juice cleanse and I’m awake. I awoke shortly after 11:30 p.m. and have not been able to get back to sleep yet. Well,  technically it is my fault. I could have drank hot tea to help me go back to sleep, but no there I lay in bed thinking about this cleanse. In some ways it feels different and in my mind I’m willing to go much longer than 12 days, if I feel like I want to do so, we’ll see.

Juice Cleanse: How am I feeling

Oh, I’m feeling a bit itchy. Also, I have a few minor breakouts on the left side of my cheek. This is normal as your body tries to remove the excess waste from your body. There are a few ways your body accomplishes this; urination, bowel movements, skin and throwing up. Yesterday, I felt great and even though I’m awake I still feel great, a bit tired but I’ll be going back to sleep in a few minutes since the hot ginger root teas has definitely worked it’s magic. I know, I know, I should have drank this a few hours ago.

Juice for the day

When I awaken in a few hours, I’ll be making juice from collards, kale, ginger, hot pepper, and lemon. I might toss a tomato or two in there also. From my years of doing juice cleanses, I’ve found that juicing dark greens to be the best way to nourish my system and flood it with a whole host of nutrients that the body craves. In addition, many of the vegetables that I include in my juicing are healing and cleansing.

Juice Cleanse: Day 3; feeling great

I’m currently going into day 3 of my juice cleanse and I feel great.

This morning, I was up at around 1:30 a.m. I couldn’t sleep and so I drank one of my potent dark green juices. What was in this blend? Obviously, it has dark leafy greens, but I also included ginger, head of garlic and a habañero pepper. The juice is very potent. I’ll post the exact recipe and accompanying picture hopefully later today. I’ll warn you, if you don’t like hot, you won’t be liking this juice. It’s not for the spicy lightweight. One of my former coworkers used to call it, ‘Opals Vegan Alcohol’.

After drinking my green juice (that has a powerful kick) I lay back down and was finally able to go back to sleep. I awoke around 4:30 a.m., ready to take on the world with tons of energy! Warm ginger tea was the first thing I drank, since it’s a great to get the digestive system moving which makes having bowel movements a bit easier. In addition, I added a teaspoon of turmeric, to my ginger tea. Why? Turmeric is great for the liver. It makes sense to help the liver out since your liver is working a bit harder  while you’re  on a juice cleanse, right?

Am I feeling hungry the third day of my juice cleanse?

I can honestly say that I’m not feeling any hunger. My body is gathering all the nutrients that it can in a highly concentrated form. Because I’m juicing, the nutrients are assimilated by my body much easier than drinking smoothies or eating solid foods.

Day 3 of my juice cleanse, How am I feeling?

I feel amazing!  In fact, I feel like running around in a wide open field, just like Julie Andrews! My nasal passages are clearer than they normally are and my energy levels are even higher. My energy levels are high already, but juicing always kicks it up a few more notches.
