House of the Rising Sun

Earlier this week, I heard this song.

I’ve heard it a few times but never caught the name or the group until this week. I’ll definitely be adding Animals, House of the Rising Sun, to my iPod.

“House Of The Rising Sun”

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin’ man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he’s satisfied
Is when he’s on a drunk

[Organ Solo]

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I’m goin’ back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

This has been a favorite of mine for a very long time — probably since it first came out. I’ve listened to it more that just a few times.

Oh yes! This is another good one! In my husband’s old band – their bass player did a really good version of this song!

This was a very very very popular song long ago – a must-learn song for anyone who could play the guitar. That was around the time of the Beatles and much later, the Eagles’ Hotel California became the guitarist’s “anthem” but there was word going round that the song’s Satanic. I liked the song and have been listening to it since long ago – don’t think it has affected me in any way.
