Upcoming movie night; Mulan

Mulan

Weekends are the time for my daughter and me to spend a lot of time with each other

Many times it’s simply hanging out together. My daughter is eight years old, and is still at the age where mommy is still her favorite person in the world to hang out with.

Today, while I was checking out some Machinima for World of Warcraft, I stumbled upon a catchy little tune, titled I’ll make a man out of you. After I Googled, I discovered that it appears to originate from the Disney movie Mulan. Being a Disney fan, I definitely want to check it out. I convinced my daughter it would be a great movie to watch. A few clicks, and I’ve requested it at the local library, so the only thing left is for me to pick it up.

This weekend, my daughter and I’ll be watching Mulan. We’ll have the popcorn and roasted garbanzo beans (they’re so delicious — and healthy). There will be plenty of paper on hand, in case my daughter decides to draw what she sees.

Mulan: I’ll make a man out of you

Much to my surprise, I found that one of my favorite actors, jackie Chan, is also a singer. I studied American Freestyle Karate and Wing Chun King Fu for several years, so was happy to see Jackie Chan’s rendition of this song. I think it’s beautiful. Enjoy!

Lyrics: I’ll Make a Man out of You

Let’s get down to business
To defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters
When I asked for sons?
You’re the saddest bunch
I ever met
But you can bet
Before we’re through
Mister, I’ll make a man
out of you

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
you are sure to win
You’re a spineless, pale
pathetic lot
And you haven’t got a clue
Somehow I’ll make a man
out of you

I’m never gonna catch
my breath
Say good-bye to those
who knew me
Boy, was I a fool in school
for cutting gym
This guy’s got ’em
scared to death
Hope he doesn’t see
right through me
Now I really wish that I
knew how to swim

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us
till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order
and you might survive
You’re unsuited for
the rage of war
So pack up, go home
you’re through
How could I make a man
out of you?

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the Coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

Fall; My favorite season

Autumn leaf

I enjoy all seasons, but my all time favorite is Fall. This year, I’m thinking of ways I can preserve the autumn leaves that my daughter and I collect without laminating them. I guess a Google search is in order.

This past weekend, my daughter wasn’t feeling that great. She received a cold, and so I kept her out of school yesterday. “Mommy, will you make me broccoli and cheese soup?” It’s her favorite comfort food, so how could I deny that? Luckily I had all the ingredients needed. Garlic was added because of it’s antimicrobial and antiviral properties. My daughter gobbled up three bowls yesterday, and I was able to sneak one bowl (without the cheese) too. My daughter has asked that I make it soon, so when I do I’ll make sure I measure the ingredients and post it here.

Adventures in card making

Cricut Imagine

Time flies by so quickly.  It seems like yesterday, when 2011 started.  Now there isn’t too many months left before this year is gone.

It’s hard to believe I’ve let the blog stagnate for so long, but part of me knew I needed a break.

Although this blog was silent, I still had an online presence, mainly through Facebook and Twitter. Admittedly, I wasn’t actively posting. However, I’d poke my head into those virtual corners every few weeks, to chat with folks, or share links. My daughter and I’ve been having a blast creating cards.

This past weekend, we started thinking of ideas for Halloween. Holiday cards are handed out by many of the students at her school. I thought it’d be nice this year to hand out personalized Halloween cards.

That was the easy part. The hardest part was  deciding what stencils to choose. Hmm….  my daughter does loves cats. I did a Google search and found numerous free samples of cats, in a variety of shapes and sizes. I finally choose a few that looked ‘sufficiently creepy’ and had my daughter pick her favorites.

Isn’t that cat precious? I shrunk this cat to fit on a small card. I cut out the actual cat, traced it onto card stock paper, and cut out the cat with an X-ACTO knife. I’ll have to post screen shots, once the card has progressed a bit.

Smelling the roses, when I can….

Although life has been extremely busy, I’m still taking time to ‘smell the roses’. I imagine (at times) it’s something many of us might forget to do at times. I know it’s happened to me repeatedly. I’m happy with the new clients I’ve acquired. These days it seems as if I’m writing my fingers to the bone. I cannot complain, since it’s something I enjoy doing immensely. Fortunately I have some great editors that have given me some amazing feedback on my writings.

Fortunately, I have some great editors that have given me some amazing feedback on my writings. Fitness, nutrition, and alternative therapy are topics I write about a lot. That comes as no surprise to those that know me, since it’s incorporated into my daily lifestyle.

In other news…

My workouts have intensified. Spring is right around the corner, and I’ve tentatively put myself out there for some amateur Figure competitions. I’m stoked! I’m also looking to enter a few marathons, but that will be during the summer months. I run about 30 miles weekly. Not a lot compared to some of my buddies, but my goals are different from theirs.

Pirates of the Caribean Remix: Captain Sparrow

Here’s one of my favorite songs from Pirates of the Caribbean, naturally I purchased this on iTunes and uploaded to my iPod. Listen to the song, you might like it. 😉 Naturally, I included this song in my workout mix.

Merry Christmas from Homey D. Clown

I’m hoping everyone is having a  fabulous Christmas. My daughter and I are spending quiet time at home. She got a Nintendo DSL Xi (25th anniversary Super Mario Bros. edition) for Christmas so she’s been happily playing with that. She even let me play Mario Kart for a few minutes.

Although things are still busy in our little world, I’ll be able to post a little more. I decided to post a video the show In Living Color. Although I haven’t seen this particular clip in a while it still makes me chuckle.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Many thanks to Evelyn of Become a Healthier You for letting me know the coding for the above video was broken.

Soccer Reflection; Running

Soccer season is officially over, and things are starting to settle down in our household. This past Saturday, my daughter’s soccer team was in the soccer tournament. Although they didn’t win they did an excellent job, and our school awarded them with trophies. They’ve all made major improvements since the start of soccer season, and it’s nice  to see that many are eagerly looking forward to next year.

My daughter will be accompanying me in some of my marathons next year. Although seven years old, she’s been the fastest runner on her team, and the teams they’ve faced. Although she won’t be accompanying me on the high distance runs, I have no problem letting her join me on runs up to 3 miles. Naturally with her accompanying me, I’m not running to place it will be just another way to bond with her and to do something we both enjoy.

Bye bye solid foods; easing into a juice cleanse

Fresh Produce

If you flip through a magazine or turn on the television at times you might see some celebrity talking about cleanses.

One that seems to be extremely popular is the Master Cleanse also called the Lemonade Diet. The ingredients consist of lemons, pure maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and purified water. That’s it!

I’ve heard about this cleanse for years, and although some claim that it’s healthy, I have a hard time believing that based on the ingredients used.

How can that be healthy following that routine for several days? I think one of the main reasons it has become popular is because of the amount of weight some have lost. I can see how that’s possible, but it’s not a healthy way to lose weight.

I do enjoy juice cleanses the difference between the liquid cleanses I use, and something like the Master Cleanse is I’m not depriving my body of nutrients, I receive my nutrients from freshly juiced vegetables and fruit – whole foods in liquid form.

I make sure I’m receiving adequate nutrients to match my active lifestyle.

Yesterday I decided to ease into the juice cleanse with an extremely delicious “green soup” that I created.

Mustard greens are plentiful in my garden, so I picked about six cups of them. Ginger, garlic, onion, garden tomatoes and corn, were quickly added to my food processor, and I blended everything. Although I could have eaten this soup raw, I decided to heat the soup.

My daughter loves the soups I make, but some of the ingredients added to this soup (garlic and ginger) would have been overpowering (for her) in its raw forum. “Mom, that’s too spicy!” would have been the comment I received, accompanied by an accusing stare. I added the puree into a stock pot, and added three cups of water, balsamic vinegar, and sea salt to taste.

I let the soup cook down for an hour. The soup turned out  delicious. It was nutritious and filling. In my daughter’s soup, I added about 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast. I stirred and served. The results? My daughter said, “Mommy this is unusual but very yummy!” My main course was a bowl of the delicious of green soup, however it was my daughters appetizer. Her main course was a homemade vegan pizza.

Lessons learned from my first cleanse

In my early twenties, I did my first juice cleanse. Even before I became Vegan I did choose healthy foods. It’s how I was raised, and when I lived on my own, I incorporated many of the principles into my eating lifestyle.

However, fasting from solids made me realize that sometimes I ate out of habit. I wasn’t really hungry since my body was used to eating at a certain times, it gave me “cues” to eat even if I wasn’t hungry.

After that first experience, I only eat when I’m hungry. I’ve been on several cleanses since my twenties, and really enjoy taking a break from solid foods.

 Cravings

The one thing I crave when I’m drinking liquids, is a vegetable pot pie. Homemade pot pies were one of my favorite meals, and I associate them with cooler days, snuggling by the fire, sipping a cup of herbal tea, book in hand as I savor my delicious pot pie. I’ll be preparing a Vegetable pot pie a few days after I start eating solid foods.

Question: Have you ever tried a juice cleanse?
