Juicing Adventures: Day Five

I’m starting day five of my juice cleanse and I’m feeling great.

Have I had a desire to eat? Yes briefly… that was yesterday evening, but I thought about it and realized that it was just a cravings and moved on. For those new drinking only juices or anyone that might have these issues I usually recommend that they assign a healthy “cheat food” so if they cave at least they are eating something healthy instead of binging on junk.  I usually recommend fruit. Years ago my “cheat food” was  grapes. I haven’t had to use a cheat food in years though. I don’t cave.

This morning I made a dark green juice drink. I took a picture, but didn’t have time to post. I love how it looked in the drinking glass. It’s dark green. I’ll post include it in a later post when I write about cleansing reactions I’ve experienced while doing this just fast.

As I already mentioned, when I do juice, my juices aren’t dominated by sweet fruits. It really makes no sense to me to keep loading my system with fruit heavy juice drinks even if it is naturally sweet. Consuming freshly prepared juices high in vegetable content is what I follow on my juice cleanses. If you look at My Pyramid, created by the Food & Drug Administration, you’ll notice that they recommend more vegetables than fruit.

Spinach

My drink this morning…

Spicy Green Juice Drink

  • 3 cups spinach
  • 1 cup kale
  • 3″ broccoli stalk
  • 4 broccoli florets
  • 1 jalapeno pepper
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 small green tomato
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • Combine everything into the juicer, drink and enjoy!

This isn’t a sweet drink, but it’s one of my favorite juiced drinks. I find that the lemon changes the taste of all the greens a bit. Also, lemons are very cleansing, and they’re a another great source of nutrients.

Adventures in Skin Care: Targeting dark spots

Besides being on a juice cleanse…

I’m also working at targeting some dark spots that my face developed when my digestion wasn’t the greatest. Enemas have done a great job in getting that and candida back on track. While I could be just let them be, I’m not the type to just roll over and do that.

I’m 42 years old, I don’t wear makeup but I do like taking care of my skin. When I was younger my skin care maintenance was non-existent after applying moisturizer, in recent years I have noticed that I have to step things a few notches. I blame some of the issues dark spots I’ve developed on my poor digestion, but since my that is back on track it’s time my skin gets back to where it used to be also. I miss my flawless complexion.
Side Profile_1

I thought it would be a great idea to document what I do. And while I could have left that personal for only my eyes to see, I thought I’d post pictures here.. blemishes and everything else. Pretty brave move on my part, right? 😉

The good news is have a few rough patches that are starting to diminish, Yeah! But of course more works needs to be done.

raw cocoa butter
Raw cocoa butter

I moisturize my skin with either jojoba oil,  virgin coconut oil or a mix of raw cocoa butter and shea butter. All the oils/butters mentioned are excellent for Black Skin care. It’s a routine I’ve been using for years and it’s made my already soft skin even softer.

Before applying moisturizer on my face, I also brush my skin; usually with a cloth or toothbrush bought specifically for skin brushing. Applying gentle pressure with a  cloth or brush. They’re great for stimulation and it’s an effective way to remove surface dirt & embedded oils on my face.

Olay Pro X Microdermabrasion
Olay Pro-X Microdermabrasion Plus Advanced Cleansing System

Yesterday, I purchased the Olay Pro-X Microdermabrasion Plus Advanced Cleansing System aka an electric skin brush from Amazon. It arrived today. I’m looking forward to using that to see if I like it more than brushing my face the manual way. I’ll be sure to post about it after I’ve used it for a while. Additionally, I’ll be writing a post about other things I use like my homemade vitamin C serum.

Deep Forest: Marta’s Song

Marta’s Song, is my favorite song from the CD Deep Forest…

This song was playing when I walked into a New Age store, Touch the Earth, in the late 1990’s. I remember asking Darren, staff on duty, the name of the CD. I purchased the CD that day.

I have great memories of that store and I credit them for introducing me to aromatherapy. The staff was always helpful and extremely knowledgeable about aromatherapy and a variety of other alternative remedies.

Good news, the juice cleanse is going very well. Yesterday evening, around 7:00 p.m., I was hit with a wave of tiredness but that didn’t last too long. Soon afterwards, I juiced and drank my last juice for the evening and I felt much better.

This morning, I awoke with more energy than I normally. I must say that is very impressive since dogs within the neighborhood were barking around 1:30 a.m.  Unfortunately, this triggered Bentley (our Shih Tzu)  to start barking. Since I’m a light sleeper naturally that awakened me and I was up for about two hours before the neighbor dog finally shut up.

Cleansing adventures: Drinking juices does not leave me hungry

Well… I’m entering my third day of drinking freshly made vegetable and fruit juices, and I’m doing fine.

You’re not depriving yourself of nutrients since you’re receiving that in the juices that you prepare. The amounts of nutrients are increased significantly since produced is changed to a concentrated form – liquid. So while I am fasting from solids, the amount of nutrients I receive from consuming produce in a concentrated liquid form far exceeds what I could possibly consume by eating solid food.

In my comment section on the Juicing Adventure: Tons of Energy I received the following comment…

suituapui says:

No solids, just this juice? You don’t get hungry? I really should try as well…
suituapui recently posted..Remember me…

I will say that I’d love to see what suituapui would whip up with juices or smoothies. The food he shares, on his site, looks very tantalizing. I imagine he’d be whipping up some awesome juice concoctions fairly quickly.

Regarding the hunger issue…

If I remember to drink my juice I’m not hungry. I did forget yesterday and felt a few hunger pangs but that was easily remedied by drinking one of my juice blends. I will say that results may vary. I don’t overeat and when I do eat solid foods the foods I eat are very similar to what I juice.

But you don’t have to make a massive switch and drink only juices if it’s something you’ve never done I always encourage people to take baby steps. Replace one meal with juice only and gradually build from there.

This morning I’m sipping on a very spicy drink. The hot peppers make it extremely spicy.

What am I drinking this morning

  • 2 cups of collards
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 medium red apple
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 1 jalapeño pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1″ ginger
  • Feed everything into the juicer
  • Enjoy

Warning, most juices I make aren’t usually sweet. In fact, some of them are bitter. I like them that way. However if you want to check out some recipes that have added sweetness, check out Joe Cross’s Juice Cleanse Recipes.  The have a natural sweetness to them some of  the  produce used really bring out the natural sweetness of the juiced drinks.

If you haven’t watched it already check out Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. It not only documents Joe Cross’s journey, but half way through it focuses on a truck driver who was tired of his physical condition (ailments and being overweight) and reached out to Joe, who was able to give him information and the moral support that he needed. It’s important to have that support.   Oh I forgot, there’s also a lady that did a ten day juice cleanse that’s included in the documentary. It seemed the main reason she did her cleanse was to help eliminate her migraines naturally…. it worked.

While my reasons for consuming only juice differs from the ones mentioned here, we share common desire to achieve a certain goal.  To be honest, I do take a break from solid foods several times yearly because I have seen the benefits of doing that. I’ve been doing them for years, and even though consuming only liquids is second nature from myself. I still am inspired by others who do the same thing. Regardless, documentaries such as this are truly inspiring.

Furbaby Adventures: Not keen on sharing

Monday, we rounded up all our furbabies (with the exception of Bentley) for some evening snacks. Bentley (our Shih Tzu) was close by and he looked puzzled. He just didn’t see why the other furbabies were going crazy over the celery. Poor doggie, he doesn’t know what he’s missing!

Sharing a celery treat

As you can see in the photo… Angel (white teddybear guinea pig) and Gracie (white lionhead rabbit) were more than happy to share their treat with each other. They were more than happy to include Oreo, since there was a stalk on her side. But after it was clear she wasn’t interested they started focusing on their snack.

Oreo (black & white Netherland dwarf rabbit) was not impressed with the actions of her adopted sisters. Although Oreo’s nose wriggled excitedly when she caught a whiff of one of her favorite treats, she made a point not to eat any.

Pals: These two love to be together

Naturally Angel and Gracie were just fine with this arrangement and made short work of the celery.

Poor Oreo!

But Oreo wasn’t forgotten, when my daughter put her in her home. She hand fed her some celery. Oreo gently bumped her nose on my daughter’s hand after she was finished. I think that’s her way of thanking us for doing something extra nice. She does that with me also.

Gracie, follows me everywhere and I imagine she’d sleep right beside me in bed if I let her, but I don’t. The girl is much too adventurous and I’m afraid with her inquisitive nature she’d get herself into trouble. It seems that she isn’t afraid of trying or doing anything. So when I go to bed, so does she. At times she’s not thrilled with that!

Bonding update

We still aren’t pushing bonding with Gracie and Oreo. They sit contentedly by each other and Gracie always rests her head on top of Oreo. She’s such a friendly rabbit, I guess she’s puzzled at the reason Oreo is so reserved. We love our timid girl, Oreo, also.  Oreo is still very shy but allows the licks from Gracie without trying to attack her. I call that progress!

Gracie will be getting spayed towards mid October so after she’s healed (some time in November) we’ll move onto the next phase, putting them on the floor together.

Cooking adventures: Spicy black eyed peas with veggies and herbs

Last evening, shortly after juicing my delicious juice drink, I decided to prepare some black eyed peas for my daughter.

And so I pulled out the my 8qt. Presto pressure cooker. My pressure cooker has received a lot of attention since I purchased it about a month ago. After ten minutes the black eyed peas were cooked and ready to be turned into a meal.

I also pulled out my mortar and pestle and proceeded to grind some spices, herbs, and finally garlic. I tossed everything into the skillet and let cook for a few minutes. I turned the heat down and then added tomato broccoli and let cook for about two more minutes. The broccoli and tomato were lightly steamed.

The meal was complete and my daughter loved how it tasted. Simple, nutritious and delicious.
